So you swim several times a week and once and a while you stop at the gym to work out on the machines. It’s a good workout but you are feeling bored with the routine. You should try water exercise.
There is so much to do in the water to compliment swim laps. Water exercise will introduce variety to your workout and give you the aerobic and strength challenges you need. Not only is Aquatic Fitness lots of fun, it also comes with benefits that land-based classes can’t offer.
One overall benefit is how exercise in the water enables you to exercise every muscle and joint in your body at the same time. Water is denser than air so you will get greater resistance with a smaller risk of injury than if you were exercising on land.
Another benefit of water exercise is the cooling effect the water has on the body. This effect allows you to work to your maximum during warmer days and push more aerobically then one might in a land based class.
The most important benefit is that anyone of any age can participate in a water exercise class and participate at their fitness level. The reason for this is because the water causes your body to be buoyant, thus causing less strain and stress on your joints and muscles.
Water exercise does not require participants to be swimmers since there are many class formats structured for shallow or deep water. In a deep water class participants can and should wear flotation to lift the body in the water for maximum resistance and correct body positioning. A vertical working position targets core muscles and creates more resistance then swimming. The increased surface area and drag through the water will give you the effective workout you need in your routine.
