What age should kids join a swim team?

The typical age for a child to join a swim team is 5-7 years old. I am the first to say it is a great idea to start your child out swimming young! However, in order for your swimmer to be prepared for success, your child should be equipped with these few key things before joining.

Comfort in the water. Unlike in lessons, coaches are not always in the water with the swimmers. It is important the child is confident getting from wall to wall without an instructor being within arm’s reach.

Stroke technique. Menlo Mavericks requires that a swimmer swim a strong length of Freestyle, Backstroke and Breaststroke and have a basic understanding of Butterfly to join Level 1.

Team Preparedness. Although there is a lot about that swimming that is individual, it is a team sport. Your child will get to know their teammates and be a part of something larger. Being prepared to be a part of a team is very important for success.

Listening skills and taking direction from a coach. Most swimmers have had a lot of practice in preschool, school and of course their swim lessons.

Love of the water!

When your swimmer has the basic knowledge and is excited about the idea of being on a swim team, get them involved as soon as possible! A swim team will help your child build their confidence, develop on their skills and endurance, and have a ton of fun!
