To Train or Not To Train

To Train or Not To Train

anonymous  /  September 16, 2014

I train almost every day and often twice per day which is called a “brick”. I always swim and then either run, or stationary bike or real bike. Its unusual for me not to do this. I compete in endurance events and I know the guys Iʼm compete against are out there training. I train for competitive reasons but also because is simply makes me feel good!

People often ask me if they can train with me and I always say yes. These good folks mean well and would really like to get fit but are dismayed when I train at 5:00am or in the rain or in the heat or in the wind. I explain that the events I compete in are not called off because of weather. I also explain that of course there are days I donʼt feel like training…I just donʼt feel like getting wet or messing with the laces on my running shoes or biggest drag of all, checking the air pressure in the tires on my bike. But I also know that there is significant benefit to training on days I donʼt feel like doing so. The mental discipline of training on those days is perhaps more important then the physical benefit.

That discipline is what gets you to the finish line, no matter if it is a race or some other life obstacle. You develop the mental grit to succeed. Iʼve also been asked if doing exercise for 12 weeks in a row results in a life time habit. Got me on that one, I donʼt know. I do know that you want exercise to become the fabric of your life, akin to brushing your teeth, just something you naturally do every day without thinking about it. So the next time you donʼt feel like exercising, go do something, even if it is just a few pushups or whatever, your mental discipline will increase. The mind tells the body what to do. So give a listen.
