How to choose a new bike

At first glance, bike shops can be overwhelming. There are so many bike options and the prices can range from $500 to $10,000. So if you are shopping for a new road bike, how should you get started?

Budget – Figure out how much you want to spend on your new bike. Subtract $100 for all the bike accessories that you will need and you have your budget for your new bike.

Frame – The bike frame is the foundation of your bicycle and your riding. First, make sure the frame is the right size for you. The shop will help with that. Next, decide if your budget will allow for a lightweight carbon frame or slightly heavier Aluminum frame. You can even get a combination of carbon and Aluminum

Components – Gears, shifters, brakes and such make up the working end of the bike. These parts also represent the most expensive part of the bike. Don’t be fooled into buying the top-of-the-line components. Shimano 105 and SRAM Force are excellent quality.

Wheels – All bicycle wheels will turn well. Lightweight wheels will turn with better efficiency but will cost you a lot. And remember that you can always upgrade your wheels later as long as you have a good frame and components.

Your shopping priorities are simple. Find the right frame, get good components, and take whatever wheels come with the bike. Stay on budget and enjoy your new ride!
